A Type-Atelier based in Singapore, Craft Varies specialises in calligraphy and hand-lettering services. The company’s portfolio of work includes calligraphic art pieces, handwritten invitations, large-scale sign-paintings and wall murals. Craft Varies works closely with commercial and personal clients to deliver customised messages to their intended recipients.
Craft Varies was founded by Clarence Valerius Wee (b. 1988), who discovered his passion for typography during the course of his tertiary education in graphic design. In order to better understand the anatomy of alphabetical forms, he went back to basics and dedicated himself to mastering calligraphy – he has been practicing for over ten years now. In 2013, he travelled to San Francisco to pick up sign-painting craft and techniques from established sign-painters, New Bohemia Signs.
In 2014, Clarence conceived ‘Tralligrapher’ to spread the awareness and appreciation of calligraphy to the masses. Combining the words ‘Travelling’ and ‘Calligrapher,’ the small-scale project takes place in cafés and specialty stores, where passersby may approach Clarence, the ‘Tralligrapher’, to get a short message handwritten on a pay-as-you-wish basis. Tralligrapher has since taken place in Australia, Bangkok, Singapore and Taiwan.
